Small amounts of sun exposure can be healthy and beneficial. For instance, exposure to sunlight brings up skin synthesis of vitamin D. Vitamin D aids our bodies to absorb calcium from foodstuffs and helps us to have strong and healthy bones.
However, unprotected exposure to the sun can cause a lot of damage to our eyes, immune system and the skin. Long and unprotected exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause premature aging of the skin, hyperpigmentation, permanently dilated capillaries, loss of skin elasticity and firmness and can also lead to skin cancers. The rate of skin cancer is currently rising amongst people of all ages, but most alarmingly amongst younger people in their 20's and early 30's.
Regulate and minimise duration of sunlight exposure: The best way to minimise the damaging effects of the sun is to limit the duration of exposure to the sun, being especially vigilant at midday, when the sun rays are the strongest and the most dangerous.
Cover up: Wear protective clothing, hats and glasses that offer UV protection. Use sun umbrellas, but remember that UV rays can be reflected upwards by surfaces on which you walk or sit, such as pavements, sand and snow.
Protect: Use protective broad spectrum sunblock or sunscreen skincare with SPF 15 protection factor or higher. Use waterproof or water resistant products. Re-apply them regularly. If you go on holiday to sunny countries, consider daily sunblock.
